What are aerial arts and circus training?
Aerial arts and circus training covers all of the stunts and acts a person can perform in the air using a flying rope, trapeze swing, cerceau (hoop) or length of fabric. It usually occurs at a minimum height of about five metres off the ground. These acts can be performed while lying still, twisting, rolling, spinning, swinging or all three. It can be performed alone or with a partner.
What makes this so different from other exercises and forms of activities?
The biggest factor with this form of movement is that it involves using your entire body weight and working with gravity. It activates postural alignment and the rotation and movement of your joints. Many find that it extends and lengthens their body making them seem slimmer and taller. It’s also great at increasing your upper body and core strength.Aerial arts and circus training also has an incredible mental benefit, as many people experience a massive boost in self-esteem and confidence when they learn to perform acts only previous seen performed by professionals or on TV.
I’m ready to begin – where do I start?
Unlike other forms of exercise, aerial arts and circus training should occur within a studio that has the facilities needed as well as trained instructors to prevent injury. While is no single qualification for teaching this skill, look for instructors who offer accredited courses or who have qualifications in performing arts or training and assessment. In addition, any school offering a course should be able to provide you with evidence that they are a registered training organisation that is regulated by Australian Skills Quality Authority and that they comply with the Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act of 2011.
